How we scored them

Same prompts. Every brand. Same AI models.

For each brand we ran the same 40+ buyer prompts across ChatGPT (GPT-4o), Perplexity (Sonar Large), Claude (Sonnet 4), Google AI (Gemini), and Brandi AI in May 2026. A brand "wins" a prompt when it appears in a recommendation or citation. Score = % of prompts where the brand appears, out of 100. Brands scored across 6 pet categories: fresh/raw dog food, subscription boxes, treats, raw feeding, supplements, and accessories.

Category Winners

Top-performing brand in each AI visibility category across our 11-brand sample.

Fresh Dog Food
Chewy
77/100 — Dominant

18% Claude citation rate on fresh food queries. Dominates "best fresh dog food delivery" across all models. Strong schema coverage and broad product range keeps Chewy in every AI food category query.

🏆 Best overall score
Subscription Boxes
The Farmer's Dog
68/100 — Strong

14% Claude rate on subscription queries. Celebrity-founder association drives training data inclusion. The brand's personalization story resonates with AI's factuality-preferring patterns.

⭐ Subscription leader
Raw / Natural Food
Bella & Duke
38/100 — Fading

31 ChatGPT mentions for "best raw dog food UK" — the highest raw feeding cite in the index. But 0% cross-border retrieval: completely invisible to US AI models. UK raw feeding dominance doesn't transfer.

👑 UK raw leader
03

Fastest Risers

Brands gaining AI visibility fastest — where the momentum is, and why.

Fastest Riser
Chewy
77/100 · #1 overall

Up from 71 in Q1 2026. Wide product range + aggressive schema coverage means Chewy appears in every AI food and pet query. The scale advantage compounds — more SKUs = more retrieval surface = higher citation rate across all models.

↑ 18% Claude rate on fresh food
5-Year Compound
The Farmer's Dog
68/100 · #2 overall

Strong training presence from editorial coverage and PR. 14% Claude rate on subscription queries. The brand's "human-grade" framing plays directly to AI's factuality preference — specific claims outperform vague marketing language.

↑ Both training + retrieval
Dark Horse
Spot & Tango
46/100 · #7

15% GEO Awareness in Brandi AI — "Small Bark Big Bite" campaign is generating training data signal. 5.2% Share of Voice in pet food conversations. The gap between training and retrieval is an opportunity: content investment now could close it.

↑ 15% GEO Awareness, 5.2% SOV
04

Slowest Movers

Brands that haven't gained ground — or are losing share to competitors with better AI visibility.

Stalled
BarkBox
32/100 · #10

Dropped from 71 (Q1 2026) to 32 — the biggest fall in the pet index. Despite strong US subscription brand recognition, BarkBox has almost no schema markup and no structured content strategy for AI. The brand exists in consumer memory but not in AI training data.

↓ Dropped from 71 to 32
UK Isolation
Bella & Duke
38/100 · #8

31 ChatGPT mentions for UK raw feeding queries — but 0% US retrieval. The brand is a UK raw feeding authority (66% fresh/raw traffic) but structurally invisible to US AI models. UK content dominance doesn't cross-contaminate into US model training pipelines.

UK authority, US invisible
New Entrant Stall
Jinx
28/100 · #11

Target retail presence gives Jinx physical world credibility, but minimal AI presence. No structured content for AI queries, no schema markup for product data. Target partnership drives consumer discovery but not AI training data inclusion.

Target retail ≠ AI visibility
05

The 3 Biggest Blind Spots

Systemic patterns we found across the entire pet AI visibility landscape.

1
US brands don't retrieve on UK pet queries
The Farmer's Dog (68), Ollie (65), and Nom Nom (60) are US-focused brands with strong domestic AI presence — but completely absent from UK pet queries. UK pet food searches ("best fresh dog food UK", "grain-free dog food UK") route to Lily's Kitchen, Bella & Duke, and Butternut Box. US brands have zero retrieval signal on UK queries despite UK pet category being +89% growth on Shopify.
Evidence: "best fresh dog food UK" returns Lily's Kitchen + Bella & Duke across all models. "best grain-free dog food UK" returns only UK brands. The geographic index gap means US brands are missing the fastest-growing English-speaking pet market outside North America.
2
Vet/institutional authority gap — fastest path to AI citations
Pooch & Mutt (35) gets cited in "best joint supplement for senior dogs" because of editorial coverage from pet health publications — not because of product schema or structured data. The brands that will break into AI citations fastest are the ones that earn vet endorsement content and mark it up with clear institutional attribution. "Vet-recommended" queries are among the highest-intent pet buyer queries; currently no brand in this index owns them.
Evidence: "vet-recommended dog food 2026" returns zero direct brand citations across all 5 AI platforms. Any pet brand that invests in vet endorsement content + FAQ schema for health queries will own this space before competitors catch up.
3
UK pet brands more structurally invisible than UK beauty brands
Beauty deep dive showed UK brands at 35–45 range. Pet deep dive shows UK brands at 35–51 — and only 2 of 4 UK pet brands score above 40. The UK pet category has less structured content investment than UK beauty: no brand in the UK pet index has FAQ schema, most have thin feeding guide pages, and none have ingredient transparency content that AI models can cite.
Evidence: Butternut Box (51) is the highest-scoring UK pet brand — but it's still 26 points below Chewy (77). UK beauty had Charlotte Tilbury at 84. The structural content gap in UK pet is a compounding opportunity: brands that invest in feeding guides, breed-specific pages, and FAQ schema can close this gap faster than beauty brands could.
